Rillo de Gallo Rock Shelters

In the heart of the Molina de Aragón region, hidden between the rock walls of a natural canyon, are the Cuevas del Llano, a set of cave paintings that transport us to a remote past. These enigmatic images, dating from two different periods, offer a fascinating window into the lives of our ancestors.

Rock Art of the Mediterranean Arc

The Levantine paintings, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, delight us with hunting scenes and anthropomorphic figures full of movement and color. Among them, a possible female headdress stands out, similar to the one found in the shelter I of Bojadillas (Albacete), although it reminds us of the importance of personal ornamentation in Neolithic societies.

The schematic representations, on the other hand, tell us about a later era, marked by the simplification of forms and abstraction. A cruciform figure and another anthropomorphic figure are the vestiges of this stage, which bring us closer to the evolution of rock art and the beliefs of the communities that inhabited the region.

How to get to the Llano Caves?

Access to this historical treasure is not easy, since the shelters are not marked or protected. To reach them, it is advisable to have the help of a local guide or someone familiar with the area.

Starting from Rillo de Gallo, you take a dirt road towards the north. After traveling about 2 kilometers, the ravine opens onto a meadow, where the water intake house for the Rillo fountain is located. From there, leave the Arroyo Viejo on the right and ascend about 500 meters along a forest path that leads to a pine replantation and a shepherd's hut. In front of this cabin is the Rillo I Rock Shelter.
