Engravings of Peña Ecripta

In the vicinity of Molina Canals, a place known as Written Peña holds a fascinating secret: a series of rock carvings which, due to their uniqueness and mystery, have intrigued researchers and visitors alike.

Distributed in two different formations, these engravings invite us on a journey through time. In a small shelter next to the stream, we found a large block of fallen stone that serves as a canvas for a multitude of engraved figures. Above it, a flat inclined rock about 30 meters long, which forms the roof of the shelter and the floor of the mountain, becomes the scene of an even more enigmatic spectacle: large engravings depicting human figures.

The particular characteristics of these figures, together with the difficulty in determining their chronological and cultural origin, have given rise to endless speculation. Some even thought that it was a modern forgery, a theory that was later disproved by the existence of documented references to the cave complex from the 17th century.

But Peña Ecripta does not end there. A few kilometers away, a small outdoor rock invites us to discover new engravings, among which crosses and chrismons are distinguished. An unsolved enigma that adds to the mystery of the human figures on the shelter.

A journey through the past without a map or compass

In spite of the lack of detailed studies that determine the age and the meaning of these engravings, the clarity of their forms, especially the human ones, turns Peña Ecripta into an enigmatic place that awakens the fascination of everyone who enters its domains.

How to get to Peña Ecripta?

Access to this place it is not signposted and is done through a forest track accessible to passenger cars that starts from Canales de Molina. From the track, an unclear path marked with blue dots and signs on the ground runs parallel to the edge of an escarpment and leads to shelter in about 10 minutes.
