Origins and Meaning: The Fusion of the Sacred and the Martial
Historical Roots
The Soldadesca de Codes is a historical and cultural tradition of Guadalajara, specifically of the town of Codes, which is part of the municipality of Maranchón. This town, located at more than 1,300 meters above sea level on a hill, stands out for its peculiar location and for being part of a region with an important juniper forest.
The tradition of the Soldadesca, which shares similarities with that of Iruecha in Soria, had been abandoned for almost 30 years until in 1996, thanks to the efforts of Javier Bueno and the local community, its annual celebration was resumed.
Symbolism and Devotion
La Soldadesca is celebrated on August 16, coinciding with the festival of San Roque and the celebrations of the Virgen del Buen Suceso. In the past, events began at dawn with a drummer waking up the inhabitants and culminated with a communal hunt.
Currently, the events include a solemn mass, a procession with the soldiers in formation, and the symbolic act of the flag bearer running the flag. The soldiery is made up of different ranks, from the Captain to the drummer, each with a specific role during the celebration.
